Sandwich Islands Network creative director Kamaka Brown conceived an idea that would establish a “musical highway” between Southern California and the “808” Hawaii’s area code. This project would present a collection of original music performed by the artist on one CD.
The idea was each artist would be living in Southern California and have some connection to the “808”. The invitations went out to talented artists who were willing to share their original music in a compilation CD. The CD would be called “California 808” with a release date of December 2015.
In October 2015 Sandwich Islands Network launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to make this dream a reality. At the end of November 2015 backers had generously supported the project and made it happen!
The music on “California 808” reflected the eclectic variety of contemporary island music played on Sandwich Islands Network radio.
Slack key artist T. Dan Hofstedt provided smooth acoustic ki ho’alu, Josh Kealoha Viloria offered feel good island reggae, Nani Edgar provided some catchy sing along pop, Sisters Emi and Lise Lee created ukulele magic, Bobby Agno and Pacific Legends contributed some throw back 70’s three part island harmonies, Kapo Ku shared an original song in Hawaiian with contemporary flavors, Kamaka Brown came to the “table” with a swing number and Bucci Canencia with Mindless Groove did smooth jazz served up just right!
The reviews came pouring in! “Awesome”, “More more, please!”, “Can’t get enough.”
